Motorola Superphone Coming Soon

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

If the Motorola superphone that their CEO, Sanjay Jha, revealed is planning to be released by the end of this year actually makes it to market, the ’smartphone’ will be a thing of the past. I mean who will want smart when they could have super? So what is this Motorola superphone supposed to be able to offer that current smartphones won’t have that will make it so much better? Let’s take a look.

Motorola Superphone Versus Smartphones

No current smartphone, not even the iPhone 4, will have the power and processing potential that the Motorola superphone is rumored to possess. A 2 GHz chip will be quite enough to literally double the current output of the 1 GHz chip that is in the most powerful phones available now. Talk about a major picker upper for speed and storage capabilities. All your programs will be working faster and smoother.

Another advantage the Motorola superphone will have over current smartphones is that it will come with the most recent Android operating system(most likely FROYO 2.2) instead of having to download the update. Along with this operating system they expect to also be able to incorporate Nvidia’s Tegra graphics chip (for super sharp images and video) which also comes with (an even the iPhone 4 doesn’t have this) Flash 10.1 hardware acceleration so that you can watch Flash movies and graphics on your phone.

How will the Motorola superphone keep up with competition like Apple’s iPhone 4? By giving their superphone the same muscle, such as adding the full 6 axis functionality that such phones as the iPhone currently have for such purposes as gaming. Other programs and apps will be added to make the phone ’super’ also. To make the keyboard controls simpler and easier to use, Swype will be available. You will even be able to rent and buy movies from Blockbuster Video that you can then stream on your t.v. or computer via another function that the Motorola superphone is sure to have, wireless tethering.

The Motorola superphone is being projected to be ready by the 2010 holiday season. Now whether that means it will be here by the Thanksgiving holiday, or the Christmas holiday, we will have to wait and see. Either way, for now, we can at least have another phone besides Apple’s iPhone’s to be excited for again. Hopefully they are not just blowing hot air to try and take away a little steam from Apple’s release of the iPhone 4, but Motorola’s CEO is the one who said it, so it’s a good bet we can get our waiting shoes on for the superphone!

Apple IPhone 3GS VS Motorola Droid You Be The Judge

Coverage: Dropped Calls & Data Speed

Who do you believe? Luke Wilson lost some weight and looks better now, but I’d trust a nerd over a B-list movie star when it comes to my phone carrier. That’s really an important part of the iPhone/Droid debate. You can compare a list of all the iPhone/Droid features and functions, but none of that will matter if you can’t get a signal. So which is truly better? Well just like the Verizon and AT&T battle, it’s complicated. Verizon definitely has the best voice coverage and quality of all wireless providers. That has always been their MO and they continue to lead in that arena.

The truth behind the maps ends there however, just ask any iPhone heavy data user or application junkie. A recent wireless 3G performance comparison by PCWorld shows that AT&T has added a significant amount of resources to improve their wireless spectrum and the results are in the pudding. So I did my own comparisons with some of my Verizon Wireless Droid friends and my very own infamous iPhone 3Gs.

I’ve had data plans with all the major carriers, except for T-mobile (they’re just way too far behind in technology and devices, but granted they do have the best customer service). I rank the following carriers in light of my own personal experience and the general census of the circle of people I know that use the Apple iPhone 3Gs and Motorola Droid, respectively.

Here’s what we came up with.

We ranked the voice coverage in the following order:

1.) Verizon Wireless 2.) Sprint 3.) T-Mobile 4.) AT&T Wireless

This is how we rated each carrier according to data coverage:

1.) AT&T Wireless 2.) Sprint 3.) T-Mobile 4.) Verizon Wireless

Equipment: Pure touchscreen vs Touchscreen with slide-out keyboard

The type of keyboard interface anyone would choose to use is a matter of personal preference of course, but what we will set straight is what kind of touch screen is more superior. How can one touch screen be better than another? By how they are touched of course…

There are actually two types of widely used touch screen technologies. The most innovative one is used by the Apple iPhone 3Gs and is called the “capacitive” touch screen. It works by recognizing the electrical properties of your finger to locate where you are touching the screen. This makes the capacitive screen much more sensitive and responsive to movement on the screen itself. The second type of screen is pressure sensitive. Thus referred to as a “resistive” touch screen. It works by stacking multiple thin layers beneath the touch screen. When pressure is applied on the face of the screen it causes these layers to come into contact, telling the phone where you are on the screen.

The Motorola Droid’s QWERTY keyboard is quite standard in function. Although critics will point out how it makes the Droid more heavy and bulky. Proponents of the keyboard are happy to make a little sacrifice to have an actual physical keyboard.

No matter what manufacturers continue to crank out, the iPhone 3Gs is still the standard by which all other smart phones are judged. The Droid came out with a ton of media hype and it has proven itself worthy to be in the same room with the iPhone, though not usurping it in any way. However, until the Apple iPhone is officially available on the other networks it will continue to be judged not only on its own merits, but that of AT&T Wireless as well. I guess that means we’ll still be seeing a lot of Luke Wilson in the near future.
